Parkview Golf Club
The Parkview Golf Club, that valuable facility for Parkview and its surrounding suburbs offers the perfect environment for that essential break-away from the frenetic pace of Jozi city life.
All Sports-minded residents and this includes non-club members, are welcome to hit balls at the Club’s practice area on the 9th fairway on Thursdays and Fridays from 16:00 to 17:30.
Killarney Country Club
Located just north of central Johannesburg in one the cities more verdant and affluent suburbs, Killarney Country Club is both easy to access and provides the perfect “inner city” golfing experience. The lush grounds of the Robert Trent designed course are magnificently maintained and are complemented by tall Highveld trees that burst into shades of fire during the autumn. In fact, to say that Killarney Country Club is one of the better looking courses around would be an understatement.
The club, formerly known as The Transvaal Automobile Club (TAC) was initially formed in 1903 and has today been moved twice to its present location in 1970, here in Houghton.
The course itself has made the most of its Kikuyu fairways and bent greens to offer an excellent challenge to all varieties of golfer. The total length is measured at 6404m and a ladies tee is offered at 5294m. Visitors are gladly welcomed.
Durban Country Club
The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, has hosted the South African Open 17 times, including the centenary SA Open in 2010, more than any other club in South Africa.
The par-five 468-meter 3rd hole is rated the best 3rd in the world, featuring a narrow fairway lined with dense bush. A well-placed bunker on the left-hand side combines to make for a very tricky hole, making the 3rd one of the most popular holes on the course.
Beachwood Country Club
A stone’s throw from Durban Country Club, the Durban Country Club Beachwood course is a hidden gem offering a superb challenge for the golfer that enjoys a typical Links layout. It is currently rated 29 in the Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in SA.
The course was taken over by Durban Country Club in the early 1990’s and underwent some refining and alterations to bring the course closer to Championship standard – offering the discerning golfer an alternative challenge to Durban Country Club course.
Mount Edgecombe Course 1
Mount Edgecombe Country Club has two 18-hole championship courses, and the older Course One was upgraded about 20 years ago when the Mount Edgecombe residential estate was initially developed. Originally known as the Huletts Country Club, and created by Sid Brews in 1936, the course was upgraded and modernised in 1992 by Hugh Baiocchi, and is one of the few courses in the country to meet the USGA specifications.
Mount Edgecombe Course One (now “The Woods”) is a parkland layout, and this extremely attractive golf course has hosted numerous amateur as well as professional tournaments and will therefore test any level of golfer. With four sets of tees, the course is playable by golfers of any handicap.
Mount Edgecombe Course 2
An 18 hole course was developed along with additional facilities for the Natal Estates Limited staff. In 1946, a more substantial clubhouse was opened and membership extended to ‘town’ members. This was to mark a historical and trying period ranging from flood damage to a fire that reduced the magnificent clubhouse to a mass of rubble. From this heartbreaking ruin arose the highly acclaimed Mount Edgecombe Country Club.
Plans for the second course began in 1994. Daysen, De Villiers and Van der Merwe were commissioned to design the championship course directly south of the existing course on Estate 1. Course 2 (now “The Lakes”) was opened at the end of ’97 and is undulating and different from the estate’s No 1 course, with indigenous bush in places, and its share of imposing water hazards. This course has the Watershed restaurant overlooking the Pani Dam where fish eagles can be spotted.
Rondebosch Golf Club
Rondebosch Golf Club’s 18-hole course is considered a ‘must-play’ Cape Town course amongst golfers. Situated only ten minutes from Cape Town’s city center, with magnificent views of Devil’s Peak and Table Mountain, the course is a popular choice for local and foreign visitors.
Since its establishment in 1911, the club has built a solid tradition, which is upheld by its loyal membership. The even balance of members and visitors makes for a welcoming, warm & friendly environment. Bar and Bistro offerings provide superb value; take a turn out of the afternoon traffic and join us on the upstairs deck for a beer and a pizza while the sun sets – the view is very special. Careful management has ensured that the course maintains its excellent condition all year round. Rondebosch Golf Course is a challenge to the serious golfer but is also accessible to the less experienced player.
It is a glaring oversight that Rondebosch is omitted from the Top 100 Courses.
